Tips to help you put your paperwork in order before applying for a mortgage
This list shows you the information you'll need during the lending process.
Starting the mortgage process
Making sure you have all your information and documents keeps the process moving. This is the information typically required when applying for a home loan:
- Personal information, including Social Security number
- Most recent pay stubs covering 30 days and including year-to-date totals
- Two years of tax returns, including all schedules (personal, business, K-1s) starting with the most recent
- Bank statements from the prior two months (all pages of all accounts)
- Most recent retirement/investment/pension statements covering two-to-four months
- Name and phone number for your insurance agent
- Copy of state-issued photo ID
- Copy of canceled earnest money check
- Copy of bank statement showing earnest money withdrawal
- Copy of most recent mortgage statement and addresses of all properties you own (if applicable)
- Copy of divorce decree/child support order (if paying or receiving child support and/or alimony)
- Landlord name and phone number (if renting)
If you currently own a home, you'll need to provide this information, as well:
- Mortgage account information
- Home insurance policy information
- Home equity account information (if applicable)
